“Jesus, I’m Hungry”
Scriptures: Luke 1:46, 53; Luke 6:20-21, 24-25
This Advent, we reflect on Mary’s revolutionary song—the Magnificat—where she proclaims a God who fills the hungry with good things and sends the rich away empty. But in a world experiencing so much food scarcity and agricultural injustice, is Mary’s song no more than a pleasant dream of what might be? Through the Magnificat, we discover that Mary—and Jesus via his Beatitudes—were acutely aware of the pressing issues of their day; yet, they were given by the Spirit a prophetic vision of a new world of justice and abundance that was emerging. As we prepare for Christ’s coming again this Advent, we’re challenged to ask: How is God calling us to participate in filling the hungry and turning the world upside down?
