All Saints Sunday
“Standing at the Watchpost”
Scriptures: Habakkuk 1:2–4; 2:1–3; 3:17–19
In an age of “now, now, now,” Habakkuk’s witness of standing atop the ramparts of Jerusalem and waiting for God’s promise to be fulfilled (but never experiencing the full fulfillment of God’s promise in his lifetime) is a counter-cultural word. When we as Christians grieve—whether that be for ourselves, our families, or for our world—”saints” like the prophet Habakkuk remind us that we do so with a sense of providential waiting. What’s surprising is that this Biblical approach to grief may help us discover—like Habakkuk—even a sense of “joy” (not happiness!) in the midst of our grieving.
